On July 26 and the days leading up to it, events will be held in cities across the country to oppose U.S. It is celebrated by Cubans and supporters of Cuba around the world as a day to show their resolve to defend the country's independence. July 26 marks the raid on the Moncada barracks in 1953 led by Fidel Castro that began the process which culminated in 1959 with the triumph of the revolution. The blockade is condemned on an annual basis by almost every country on the planet at a formal vote in the United Nations. The blockade is aimed at making life unbearable for the people, cutting off access to food, medicine, fuel and many other basic essentials of life.
